Of Virgil's life we do not know much for certain. He writes little about himself in his surviving poetry, and contemporary records are scarce. We are told that he was born in 70 BC in Andes, a village near Mantua in what is now Northern Italy - but at the time of Virgil's birth this area was called Gallia Cisalpina ('Gaul on this side of the Alps'). He is said to have been educated in Cremona and Mediolanum (Milan); but we have no sure information about his life until the publication of his first collection of poems, the pastoral Eclogues, in (probably) the early 30s BC. Around this time he seems to have entered the circle of Maecenas, the aristocratic literary patron close to Octavian (the future emperor Augustus, who was the adopted son and heir of Julius Caesar and at this point one of the key figures on the Roman political scene). Of Virgil's activities in the turbulent period of the 30s, we again know very little - although a vignette survives in the poetry of his contemporary and friend Horace (Satires 1. 5). He seems to have lived near modern Naples. 

At least some of his time will have been spent in the composition of his next poem, the four-book Georgics: this masterpiece (for Dryden, simply 'the best poem by the best poet') is ostensibly a work on agriculture and farming couched in didactic terms, but the poem also offers sustained reflection on contemporary history as well as on timeless themes of love and sex, rural life and the relationship between man and the earth. Dedicated to Maecenas, and finally published in 29 BC, the Georgics established Virgil as the foremost Latin poet of an exceptional generation (his rough contemporaries included Horace, Propertius, Tibullus, Varius Rufus and Gallus).

Exactly when Virgil made the decision to embark upon what was to be his final work, the epic Aeneid, is not known. The beginning of the third book of the Georgics announces his plan to write an epic for Octavian, but the Aeneid as published is very different from the poem there imagined. At any rate, the poem must have taken up much of his time during the 20s; eagerly anticipated during its composition ('make way, Roman writers, make way, you Greeks! - something greater than the Iliad is coming to birth', said Propertius), the Aeneid confirmed Virgil's reputation as Rome's greatest poet - and is said to have made him a very rich man. The poem seems to have been substantially complete when the poet died in 19 BC, but the presence of incomplete lines clearly indicates that the finishing touches had not yet been applied. Indeed, there is a story that Virgil ordered the poem to be burned, but that this was forbidden by the emperor Augustus - the poem was instead handed over to Virgil's friends Varius Rufus and Plotius Tucca to be edited for publication.

Virgil lived through one of the most tumultuous periods of Roman and indeed world history, when the Republican system which had seen the city rise from humble beginnings in central Italy to a position of dominance in the Mediterranean world finally collapsed amidst a series of brutal civil wars. Hundreds of thousands died as Roman armies fought each other from Spain to Asia, from Greece to Egypt; furthermore, the cherished libertas (freedom) of the old Republic was lost in the process, as firstly Julius Caesar, and later his adopted son and heir Octavian, established positions of dominance in the state. It was the latter (who took the name Augustus in 27 BC) who encouraged Virgil to compose the Aeneid.

The relationship of the poem to contemporary history and to the Augustan regime is not straightforward. As we have seen, Georgics III offers an 'advance notice' of an epic praising Octavian's military exploits - but Virgil seems to have reconsidered this idea (if it was ever seriously entertained). His eventual choice of a distant mythical past as the setting for his poem solved a number of problems; firstly, it enabled him to avoid sustained direct engagement with recent history (the dangers of which were very real, being compared by Horace to walking upon ashes beneath which the fire was still smouldering); and secondly, it offered considerably greater prospects for Virgil's literary ambitions. For although epic poems on historical events or figures were not unknown in the ancient world (indeed, some were very popular), they had not gained the prestige which mythological epics held. By setting his epic for Augustus in the mythical past, Virgil was able to invite comparison with the great early Greek epics, the Iliad and Odyssey attributed to Homer. These two poems formed the cornerstone of Greek and Roman literary culture. Although any attempt to rival them was therefore fraught with danger - the danger of seeming derivative, or merely a Homeric pastiche - it also represented the height of literary ambition, the greatest achievement possible for a poet. And Virgil announces his rivalry in the opening words of the Aeneid; 'arma virumque cano', 'I tell about war and the hero' (Dryden's famous 'Arms and the man I sing'). 'Arms' looks back to the martial epic exemplified in the Iliad; 'the man' alludes to the first word of the Odyssey ('andra' in Greek, meaning 'man').

Virgil attempts to bring the two epics together in his Aeneid, the first half of which is dominated by an Odyssean-style wandering, the second half by an 'lliadic' concentration on the war in Italy And his success in this creative imitation is perhaps his most important contribution to European literature - as one of the first and quite possibly the greatest of all sustained creative responses to earlier literary traditions, the Aeneid inspired poets centuries later, from Dante to Milton to Eliot.

The story of the Aeneid centres on the fortunes of Aeneas, a refugee from the city of Troy sacked by the Greeks after the famous ten-year siege. Having escaped from Troy, Aeneas and the Trojans who have followed him wander the Mediterranean in search of a new home. A series of warnings and prophecies tell Aeneas to head for Italy in the West, where he is destined to found a mighty empire. But his attempts to reach Italy are continually frustrated, not least by the goddess Juno, who engineers a particularly lengthy delay in the city of Carthage on the North African coast. When Aeneas finally reaches Italy he is forced to fight against fierce native resistance in order to establish a settlement - and only after a prolonged struggle, concluded by his killing of the Italian leader Turnus, is he able to fulfil his destiny.

These are the bare bones of the plot (a more detailed book-by-book account follows this introduction) around which Virgil builds his epic. To the Homeric themes of wandering and fighting are added elements inspired by later poetry - for example Aeneas' extended love affair with Dido, the queen of Carthage, the presentation of which draws on the tragic heroines of Greek theatre and of Apollonius' Hellenistic epic on the Argonauts. Elsewhere, Virgil expands the range of epic even further, above all in the magnificent account of Aeneas' journey to the underworld in Aeneid VI; this finds a superficial model in Odyssey XI where Odysseus consults the shade of the seer Teiresias at the entrance of Hades, but Virgil develops this idea far beyond the Homeric conception, creating an atmosphere profoundly different from anything in surviving Greek heroic epic - a creation which was to inspire Dante's The Divine Comedy and many lesser imitations.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the Aeneid is its juxtaposition of mythical material with celebration of the achievements of Augustus. For Virgil takes the claim of Julius Caesar's family - the lulii - that they were descended from lulus, the son of Aeneas, and is thus able to establish a direct link between the mythical founder of the Roman state and its current head Augustus. This facilitates the inclusion of much encomiastic material -particularly in Jupiter's reply to Venus after Aeneas' shipwreck in Book I, and later in the parade of Roman heroes in the underworld in Aeneid VI. But the Aeneid is not only about Augustus: it is about Rome, and Roman history. Aeneas is not only the ancestor of Augustus; as a refugee, and then an imperialist conqueror, he is a prototype of the Roman people themselves. In the most famous lines of the poem, Aeneas is told by the shade of his father Anchises:

'But, Romans, never forget that government is your medium! Be this your art: to practise men in the habit of peace. Generosity to the conquered, and firmness against aggressors. ' (VI. 851-3)

The Roman imperial destiny with all its glory and all its difficulties and dilemmas, looms into view in these lines - and is subjected to a searching analysis as we follow Aeneas' own (sometimes imperfect) attempts to follow his father's advice throughout the second half of the poem. In such ways as this, Virgil's great epic moves beyond its immediate historical context to consider great human themes - and takes its place in the pantheon of the world's great classics.

When Alice sees the White Rabbit run by, it occurs to her that she's never seen a rabbit with a watch before. Burning with curiosity, she jumps up and follows him into a rabbit-hole. Then she falls down a long, long way.

Down into the world of the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, the Duchess, the Cheshire Cat and the Mock Turtle. Down into Wonderland, where an ordinary little girl can have the most extraordinary adventures. Lewis Carroll's classic tale has been translated into more languages than almost any other book, and remains a perennial favourite worldwide.

With David Bamber as the splendid White Rabbit, Roy Hudd as the Mad Hatter and Sarah-Jane Holm as Alice, the spellbinding and fantastic story sparkles with nonsensical life in this full-cast dramatisation.

There are at least two ways of reading this classic children's tale. One may either regard it as an innocently inventive and diverting piece for readers of all ages - or one may choose to bring to bear on it the full weight of academic analysis, be it literary, mathematical, philosophical or psychoanalytical.

The book was first published in 1865 and 1871, and has been hugely popular ever since. Unlike most Victorian children's books (including Carroll's own Sylvie and Bruno), it is refreshingly unmoralistic and brilliantly imaginative. Perhaps one might see it as a pioneering work in the rich tradition of British children's writing which includes (for example) The Wind in the Willows, the Pooh books and the animal tales of Beatrix Potter. But Alice is in many respects more demanding and disturbing - even children unaware of symbolic interpretation may well be haunted or discomfited by the dream worlds Carroll has created, worlds where it is not quite enough to say that nonsense prevails since there is almost always a kind of perverse or inverted logic at work.

In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland the child heroine dreams the experiences which constitute the story, and (of course) wakes at the end to tell her sister what has happened. The dream world of Wonderland is peopled largely by creatures which speak, feel and behave much like caricatured human beings: the White Rabbit, for instance, is clearly neurotically obsessed by time and terrified of authority, while the playing-card King and Queen of Hearts bicker like an ill-matched, long-married couple. Anger, violence and the threat of violence are real enough within the dreamworld - the dormouse is scalded and dunked at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party -while irritation and disillusionment seem more common than contentment - witness the doleful narrative of the Mock Turtle. At times, Alice seems to be in real danger, whether from flying saucepans in the Duchess' kitchen or from the attentions of a gigantic puppy, but at last she is able to break free from the suffocating power of her fantasy by exclaiming, after she has regained her normal size, 'Why, you're nothing but a pack of cards!'

Child listeners will surely be delighted by the picaresque variety of the story, but adults may wonder about some possible deeper or unifying interpretation. Freudian readings are legion, but it may be more interesting to see the adventure as a disturbing challenge to our conventional notions of reality Carroll repeatedly asks questions about the nature of time or the meaning of names, poses mathematical paradoxes and semantic quibbles - and the effect of this is to promote an acute unease, a fundamental, perhaps existential, uncertainty about meaning and purpose. Martin Gardner (editor of The Annotated Alice) suggests that 'the last level of metaphor in the Alice books is this: that life, viewed rationally and without illusion, appears to be a nonsense tale told by a mathematician.'

In this selection of the very first Letters, Cooke reports on a memorable range of events, including the threat to the United States during World War II, the funeral of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the shocking occasion when a bomber hit the Empire State Building and the presidential election of 1948.

The Canterbury Tales, written near the end of Chaucer's life and hence towards the close of the fourteenth century, Is perhaps the greatest English literary work of the Middle Ages: yet it speaks to us today with almost undimmed clarity and relevance.

Chaucer imagines a group of twenty-nine pilgrims who meet in the Tabard Inn in Southwark, intent on making the traditional journey to the martyr's shrine of St Thomas a Becket in Canterbury. Harry Bailly landlord of the Tabard, proposes that the company should entertain themselves on the road with a storytelling competition. The teller of the best tale will be rewarded with a supper at the others' expense when the travellers return to London. Chaucer never completed this elaborate scheme - each pilgrim was supposed to tell four tales, but in fact we only have twenty-four altogether - yet, with the pieces of linking narrative and the prologues to each tale, the work as a whole constitutes a marvellously varied evocation of the medieval world which also goes beyond its period to penetrate (humorously, gravely tolerantly) human nature itself.

Chaucer, as a member of this company of pilgrims, presents himself with mock innocence as the admiring observer of his fellows, depicted in the General Prologue. Many of these are clearly rogues - the coarse, cheating Miller, the repulsive yet compelling Pardoner - yet in each of them Chaucer finds something human, often a sheer vitality or love of life which is irresistible: the Monk may prefer hunting to prayer, but he is after all a manly man, to be an abbot able. Perhaps only the unassuming, devoted Parson and his humbly labouring brother the Ploughman rise entirely above Chaucer's teasing irony; certainly the Parson's fellow clergy and religious officers belong to a Church riddled with gross corruption. Everyone, it seems, is on the make, in a world still recovering from the ravages of the Black Death.

Best known for his tales of the macabre and mystery, Poe was one of the early American practitioners of the short story and a progenitor of detective fiction and crime fiction. He is also credited with contributing to the emergent science fiction genre.[1] Poe died at the age of 40.

She once again meets Alec d’Urberville – and so begins a chain of events which culminate in tragedy for all.

In this classic tale of wartime espionage, Richard Hannay’s living nightmare begins at home with the discovery of a dead man in his London flat. He becomes an innocent on the run, pursued by the police for a murder he didn’t commit.

In Scotland Hannay realises that the notebook he recovered from the dead man is worth far more than he first thought, not least of all to a gang of German spies who will apparently stop at nothing to retrieve it.

The Foreign Office in London is his last refuge of safety, and when Sir Walter Bullivant becomes convinced of Hannay’s innocence the two join forces. If they are to foil German plans to attack the British fleet, they must first unlock the notebook’s secret of the thirty-nine steps...

Like most of his generation, Mark Twain, the great 19th century comic American writer, knew and loved the book. He wrote mainly about his own time - and his greatest successes such as Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer drew on the Mississippi countryside where he grew up. But he also had a wicked sense of humour, and he wanted to show that Malory's picture of brave knights and rescued damsels was not as shiny or honourable we may like to think.

From the moment the idea came to him, to whisk a modern man (modern=1880s for Twain) back in time to the heyday of Camelot, he couldn't resist elaborating on the realities of life In Arthurian times. His Connecticut hero. Hank Morgan, found not a land of grace and ideals but one which was smelly, dangerous, uncomfortable and backward.

Hank finds that life is regarded as cheap, that torture and execution are commonplace, that superstition is everywhere and even Merlin is a con-man. Few wash, the music is terrible, living in armour is horrendous and deception is everywhere.

So Hank decides that he will make the best of his situation and introduce 6th century England to some of the improvements of his contemporary (19th century) existence - advertising, soap, newspapers, stocks and shares, and the railroad. And, with his superior knowledge, he will become The Boss.

How do the people of an older time take to it? In much the same way Twain suggests, as we would if someone from the distant future came down and tried to make us live their way: The older people generally do not like giving up their traditional ways, even though there were very clear advantages and only the youth can adapt.

Yet despite this, Hank cannot but admire some qualities of those knights and their damsels - not least the ability to stand up and fight in steel armour that would crush the contemporary man.

The novel began mainly as a delightful fantasy, but as Twain wrote, the darker side of his own character and view of the human race emerged. He believed in science, economics and practicalities; and government based on the equalities of opportunity that characterised America of Twain's day He couldn't accept a people who would choose monarchy. A Connecticut Yankee shows what can happen when these two very different societies come together.

This radio version of Coriolanus captures the dramatic battles and speeches as the valiant but elitist soldier Coriolanus fights to win glory for Rome and keep power away from the city's masses. Susannah York plays his strong-willed mother, whose warrior feelings have found fruition in the mighty Coriolanus and who, in the end is the only one who can save Rome from her son's vengeance.

The play is introduced by Richard Eyre, former Director of the Royal National Theatre.

Bill Masen wakes in his hospital bed, eyes bandaged. Something is wrong, it's unusually quiet and no one has come to his room. When he removes his bandages he finds a world that has changed utterly. Most of the population are completely blind — only those who didn't watch the night sky can still see.

And as law and order break down, a new menace appears — triffids, walking carnivorous plants that can kill a human with their lethal sting. For Bill and the other survivors, it's now a battle to stay alive.

First published in 1951, John Wyndham's novel became his best-known work and a classic of 20th Century fiction.

Yet the first printed account, written by the 15th century knight Sir Thomas Malory, remains unmatched. In words which speak as directly to us today as they did to his own period, he brings to life a rich tale of heroism and ideals undermined by the poignance of human emotions.

This six-disc recording covers the final three volumes of Gibbon's work, tracing ten centuries in the life of the eastern half of the empire, whose capital city was Constantinople. Among the many figures who stride across Gibbon's stage here are the emperor Justinian I, a noble statesman and successful warrior, brought low by his lascivious wife, the former prostitute Theodora; the murdering Basil I, a peasant who nonetheless proved himself a worthy figure upon which to drape the purple; and the final emperor of all, Constantine XI, who died on the battlements of Constantinople in 1453, valiantly fighting a losing battle to prevent the Turks from gaining a city they had craved for centuries.

It is still the work that sets the standard for all histories of the period.

Chapters I-XI (98 - 268 AD)
Edward Gibbon begins The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by setting the scene at the time of Augustus, the first emperor of Rome and describing the extent of the empire. It was a crucial time - in his last testament, Augustus advised that the Roman Empire should be contained within the geographical limits attained at the time. Britain had been added, and the period of active aggrandisement was over.

He passes rapidly over the following reigns, including the periods of Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius I, Nero and Trajan, and concentrates on the 43 years of order and justice maintained during the administration of the Antonines, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius.

This was followed by the indulgence and cruelties of Commodus, succeeded, in his turn, by the virtuous Pertinax, whose brief reign was cut short by one of the first real displays of power by the Praetorian Guard. Thereafter, Septimus Severus introduced the dangerous pattern of mollifying the Praetorian Guard, which played a disproportionate part in the vicissitudes of the empire.

A further period of licentiousness and despotism followed with the extravagances of Caracalla and Elagabalus. After another all-too-short period of peaceful rule under Alexander, the empire was ruled by the tyrannical Maximin, and five others who all died within six months. This part of Gibbon's account concludes with the accession of Claudius II in AD 268.

Chapters XI to XVII (268 AD - 334 AD)
In this section, Gibbon continues his masterly survey by looking at some of the strongest figures in Roman history. There were four years of memorable achievement under Aurelian, and the "illustrious" joint reign of Diocletian and Maximian when administrative sense and order prevailed over the Western and Eastern empires. It was a time, also, which saw the end of Rome as the effective capital of the empire.

The sensible partition of power was not to last for long. From a period of turmoil, Constantine emerged to rule on his own and eventually set up a new capital on the banks of the Bosphorus - Constantinople.

It is also in this section that Gibbon considers the growth of Christianity and the early Christian Church. His account questioned the established views towards the Roman persecution and aroused the ire of Gibbon's contemporaries despite its scholastic basis. The historian himself stood by his comments that the persecution of the Christians was neither as extensive nor, in political terms, as inappropriate as was generally accepted.

Chapters XVIII - XXXVI (323 - 490 AD)
The reign of Julian was short (361-363), yet Gibbon devotes no fewer than three chapters to his personality and achievements. Frugal, even austere in his habits, Julian began as a philosopher and ended an emperor on the battlefield, and, through Gibbon's eyes, emerges as one of the most impressive in the catalogue of Roman rulers.

But neither he, nor other able rulers such as Theodosius, could do more than momentarily halt the decline of the Roman Empire. The incursions of the barbarians, including the Goths under Alaric (leading to the first sack of Rome) and the Huns under Attila, sounded its death-knell.

This account ends with the reign of Odoacer, the first barbarian king of Italy.

Before the astonished eyes of his companions Ben and Polly, the Doctor's whole body has apparently been transformed. Now they are confronted by a stranger who claims to be their old friend - but how can they know whether to trust him?

The Tardis's arrival on the swamp planet of Vulcan brings its own problems; the Doctor is mistaken for an official come to solve the Earth colony's in-fighting, and soon he and his companions are embroiled in political wranglings. However, a far more serious threat lurks within the colony. The scientist Lesterson has discovered a crashed space capsule, within it a group of inert metallic creatures which the Doctor identifies as Daleks. Refusing to heed the Doctor's warnings, Lesterson supplies power to the Daleks and revives them.

The awakened Daleks claim to be faithful servants of humanity - but could such a thing ever be possible? By covert means they seek an increasing level of energy, but for what? By the time the Doctor and his friends discover the Daleks' true plan for the colony, it looks as if it might already be too late to stop them...

Anneke Wills , who plays Polly in the story, narrates this debut story for the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton , first broadcast in 1966 and long since missing from the television archives.

Mark Robarts, a young vicar, is newly arrived in the village of Framley. With ambitions to
further his career, he seeks connections in the county's high society. He is soon preyed
upon by a local member of parliament to guarantee a substantial loan, which Mark in a
moment of weakness agrees to, even though he knows the man is a notorious debtor,
and which brings him to the brink of ruin.

Meanwhile, Mark's sister, Lucy, is deeply in love with Lord Lufton, the son of the lofty Lady
Lufton. Lord Lufton has proposed, but Lady Lufton is against the marriage, preferring that
her son choose the coldly beautiful Griselda Grantly.

The novel will conclude with four happy marriages, including one involving Doctor Thorne,
the hero of the preceding book in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series.

But Mary Shelley's original novel, written in 1816, dealt more sympathetically with "the daemon", showing how an initially beneficent creature is hammered into a daemon by the way he is treated.

Her ideas, and her dramatic but poignant story, is brought to life in this sound dramatisation.

Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus

Mary Shelley was the daughter of the radical feminist Mary Wollstencraft and the mistress - later the wife - of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. In 1816, she and her half-sister, Claire Claremont, mistress of both Shelley and Byron, followed Shelley into exile from his native land, where his frank espousal of a philosophy of 'free love' and his outspoken atheism had been little relished. They spent the summer with Lord Byron (also on the run from scandal in England) who had taken the Villa Diodati on the shores of Lake Geneva. The company may even have been joined by the shade of Milton who had once occupied the house. But the current of creative genius that had produced the divine spark in Milton had become, in the popular imagination, something demonic in these two arch-romantic poets.

On June 15, as the lightning flickered across the lake, Mary listened to the conversation of Byron, Shelley and Dr Polidori, Byron's young amanuensis. They were discussing galvanism (the medical use of electric current) and the possibility of provoking the very spark of life by its means. The subject was of particular interest to Shelley who had experimented with electrical instruments at Oxford. At the same time the company were deeply engrossed in German horror stories, and the following day they each agreed to try their hand at writing a ghost story. The published outcome was Polidori's The Vampyre, adapted from Byron's effort, which had in turn been inspired by an hysterical fantasy from Shelley - and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Inspiration had been slow in coming, but when it did her nightmarish creation broke upon her drowsing consciousness fully-formed. She "saw the pale student of unhallowed arts" turning in horror from "his odious handiwork", the vile assemblage of human remains which he had animated with the breath of life. And in working out this ghastly fantasy into a full narrative her inspiration did not desert her. She was hardly nineteen. Though she lived another thirty-five years, she never again approached the visionary grandeur of conception achieved in this, her first literary effort. All her youthful life's experience went into it. Above all, it was about Shelley himself, who is both the idealistic creative spirit and the hounded outcast, both Dr Frankenstein and his monster. In a sense, the popular misconception that gives the name Frankenstein to the monster himself is an appropriate one. Frankenstein's creation haunts him like his own evil genius, his own shadow made flesh. For it is his refusal to take responsibility for the unprepossessing fruit of his actions that turns it into an avenging angel, destroying all the human connections that make life meaningful, as it pursues him to the grave.

Frankenstein is a meditation upon the grounds of evil inspired by the anarchist philosophy of Mary's Father, William Godwin. It is also a daring development of Milton's vision of the fallen angel in Paradise Lost and a critique of the idea of Divine creation itself. But finally, it must be recognised as quite a new-thing for its time: it is the first work of science fiction in English. And as science fiction it is about the limitations of goodwill without wisdom. It is a dire warning against technological hubris, against the temptation to assume that benevolent intentions are sufficient to procure beneficent results. Its timely message is that there are matters with which we tamper at our peril. As such, the novel remains the most powerful Promethean fable of modern times.

With careful, quiet observation and subtle irony, Mansfield investigates the variety of relationships that make up a life and the complex emotions of unfulfilled longings. In the title story, a young woman's garden party coincides with the death of a working-class neighbor, bringing a brush of mortality and realism into her carefully constructed plans and ideals. The Garden Party was the last of Mansfield's works to be published before her untimely death at the age of 35.

in the coal fields of nineteenth-century France. A father and three of seven children work brutal hours, facing
hazards such as landslides, fire, and poisoned air, to scrape together enough money for food. When their
lodger, tienne, shares ideas of a workers' revolt, the family gradually embraces his plans. Soon the
settlement is aflame with resolve to strike for better wages and working conditions. Savage and horrifying
events ensue as miners clash with management and with each other.

figure in the French school of naturalistic fiction. Andr Gide chose this masterpiece as one of the ten best

The narrator, James Taylor, has more than 40 years experience as a professional actor. His diversity ranges from Theatre in London’s West End, numerous television appearances and the voice of Rune Haako in Star Wars (The Phantom Menace). Even so, James regards ‘Selborne’ as one of his most rewarding challenges. He insisted on studying Richard Mabey's biography of Gilbert White before producing a truly compelling performance.

Set in the 1920s, The Glimpses of the Moon details the romantic misadventures
of Nick Lansing and Susy Branch, a couple with the right connections but not much in the way of funds.
They devise a shrewd bargain: they'll marry and spend a year or so sponging off their wealthy friends,
honeymooning in their mansions and villas.

As Susy explains, "We should really, in a way, help more than we should hamper each other. We both
know the ropes so well; what one of us didn't see the other mightin the way of opportunities, I mean.

The other part of the plan is that if either one of them meets someone who can advance them socially,

Jay Gatsby is still in love with Daisy, whom he met during the war when he was penniless. Having made himself wealthy through illegal means, he now lives in a mansion across the bay from the home of Daisy Buchanan, who has since married for money. Holding on to his illusion of Daisy as perfect, he seeks to impress her with his wealth, and uses his new neighbor, Nick Carraway, (our narrator), to reach her.

Daisy's wealthy but boring husband is cheating on her. When his mistress is killed in an accident caused by Daisy, Gatsby covers for her and takes the blame. The result is a murder and an ending which reveals the failure of money to buy love or happiness.

Fitzgerald's elegantly simple work captures the spirit of the Jazz Age and embodies America's obsessions with wealth, power, and the promise of new beginnings.

In writing this extraordinary play Shakespeare effectively re-invented tragedy after an interval of roughly two thousand years - we have to go back to the Greek dramatists of 5th century Athens to find anything of comparable depth and maturity.

        Certainly Shakespeare had already dealt with tragic themes and situations in plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Richard II and Julius Caesar, but in Hamlet he found himself able to fuse with complete artistic success the conflicting concerns of the private individual and the public state of which he is a member, or for which he may indeed be responsible - Hamlet is, after all. Prince of Denmark. This is a quin-tessentially Renaissance theme: it is no longer enough to appeal to an accepted moral or religious system, but instead each man must find out for himself a moral path through the 'unweeded garden' of life.

        The first known version of the Hamlet story is found in the twelfth century Historia Danica by Saxo Grammaticus. Most of the main ingredients of the story are already present, albeit in primitive form, and some of the names, too -'Amlethus' for Hamlet. In 1576 Francois de Belleforest retold the story in his Histoires Tragiques, translated into English in 1608 and hence too late for Shakespeare to have read - but someone, perhaps Thomas Kyd, came across the story in the 1580's and turned it into a play which must have been Shakespeare's immediate source, however radically different Shakespeare's version turned out to be. We know, incidentally, that the idea of a ghost seeking revenge comes from this lost play: Thomas Lodge in 1596 writes of the 'ghost which cried so miserably at The Theater, like an oyster wife, "Hamlet, revenge.         Medieval and Renaissance Periods
        Western classical music, like drama, began in church with the chanting of monks. Out of this plainchant grew choral polyphony -many sounds - as the vocal line was embellished and developed. As composers became interested in rhythm, contrast, harmony and music with words not taken directly from the mass, new vocal forms were introduced. This was the age of the motet, the madrigal, the chanson and carols. Slowly too, instruments began to be incorporated into musical performance and composers began to write for ensembles. From dance came the idea of musical contrast, and the seeds of all later music were sown.

        Baroque and Classical Periods
        The musical form above all others that came from the Baroque period was opera, a form reflecting the time's love of theatrical excess. Even religious music was written to be staged, hence the development of the oratorio and the chorale, while the increasing virtuosity of instrumentalists led to the formation of orchestras and the development of the concerto grosso.

        Taken up by composers of the classical period, the concerto grosso became the symphony the contrast of a soloist against an ensemble became the concerto, and, at the other end of the scale, the sonata and the string quartet came into being.

        The Romantic Period
        Romantic composers believed that music was an expression of their inner feelings and so they produced music that was wild, tempestuous and often tried to tell a story. Tone-poems, programme symphonies and large scale concertos became their hallmark. Increasing nationalism was reflected not just in the use of folk tunes in orchestral music but also in the subject matter of operas.

        And if there was one instrument above all others that the Romantics claimed as their own it was the piano. Many composers, like Liszt and Chopin, were virtuoso performers who wrote their pieces to show off their own talents.

        The 20th Century
        The 20th century is the most confusing of all musical periods. It is a century in which the old empires crumbled, the world map was redrawn by two world wars, and in which there are still nationalist conflicts. It is also a century in which man has walked on the moon. The immense political and scientific changes have been reflected in art and in music as composers have sought to find a new musical voice.

        From the atonalism of Schoenberg to the rhythmic experiments of Stravinsky, from the aural impressionism of Debussy to the electronic world of Varese, composers have tried to examine what music is and how it relates to life. Some of these experiments have taken music away from popular taste, others have proved to be a dead end; but all have contributed in some measure to the mainstream so that classical music now is as rich, vibrant and diverse as it has ever been.

As the 1950’s dawned, Betty began her second career, a solo career that took her from NYC to San Francisco and Chicago to New Orleans with live performances on a regular basis. Frequent appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show and Jack Paar’s Tonight Show coincided with the recording of several hit songs for RCA, Bell Records, and Bally Records in Chicago. In 1958, Betty joined Atlantic records and hit the pop charts with 3 hits in her first year alone. Fast forward 50 years and Betty is well into her third career in music.
